Which topics actually come up in VCE Maths Methods exams?

We classified all 268 questions from the 16 VCAA Mathematical Methods written examinations sat between 2018 and 2025 — Exam 1 and Exam 2 for each year — and counted how often each topic is actually examined.

The short answer

Five concepts were examined in every one of the 16 papers. If you are deciding what to revise first, these are not optional.

Every concept, ranked by how many papers examine it

"Papers" counts how many of the 16 examinations tested the concept at least once. "Questions" counts individual questions across all papers; a question testing more than one concept is counted under each.

How this was measured

  1. Source. The 16 VCAA Mathematical Methods written examinations, 2018–2025 (Exam 1 and Exam 2 each year). Published solutions were excluded, so a concept counts only where it is actually examined, not where it happens to appear in a worked answer.
  2. Questions. Papers were split into their 268 individual questions.
  3. Classification. Each question was classified against the concepts of the Methods study design. Classification is multi-label, because a single extended-response question routinely tests several concepts across its parts.
  4. Frequency. A concept's frequency is the share of the 16 papers in which it is examined at least once.

Limitations, stated plainly

Classification of long multi-part questions tends to be generous, which slightly inflates the rarest concepts; the high-frequency end is unaffected. Seven of the 268 questions (2.6%) could not be confidently classified and are excluded. These figures describe what has been examined historically and are not a prediction of any future paper.

Common questions

Which topics appear in every VCE Maths Methods exam?

Across all 16 VCAA Mathematical Methods written examinations from 2018 to 2025, stationary points, definite integrals, transformations, domain & range, chain rule were examined in every single paper.

How many questions are in a VCE Maths Methods exam?

Exam 1 (no calculator) has 8 to 9 questions. Exam 2 has 20 multiple-choice questions in Section A plus 5 to 6 extended-response questions in Section B. Across the 16 papers from 2018 to 2025 there are 268 questions in total.

Is hypothesis testing on the VCE Maths Methods exam?

No. Hypothesis testing with p-values and Type I/II errors did not appear in any of the 16 VCAA Methods examinations from 2018 to 2025, and is not part of the Methods study design. The statistics content in Methods Unit 4 covers random variables, the binomial and normal distributions, sample proportions and confidence intervals.

Are inverse trigonometric functions examined in Maths Methods?

No. Inverse circular functions such as arcsin and arccos belong to Specialist Mathematics, not Mathematical Methods. They were not examined as a concept in any of the 16 papers analysed.
